How to Choose the Right Outdoor Rug
Outdoor rugs do more than define a seating or dining area—they introduce texture, warmth, and visual balance to open-air spaces. But not all outdoor rugs are created equal. Here’s what we consider when selecting the perfect one:
1. Material Matters
For performance and longevity, look for rugs made from:
∙ Polypropylene – Good for durability, fade resistance, and mold/mildew prevention
∙ Recycled PET – Eco-friendly and soft underfoot, made from repurposed plastic bottles
∙ Polyester blends – These offer color vibrancy and softness but work best in covered or less-exposed areas
∙ Natural Fibers – Sisal, jute and seagrass are eco-friendly and beautiful. Not ideal for high-moisture climates, but can be a great in a dry climate and create a very sophisticated, classic look.
2. Style Meets Function
Think of your outdoor rug like you would any area rug inside: it should anchor the space and elevate the design. Depending on your aesthetic, consider:
Textural neutrals for a subtle, organic look
Bold patterns or stripes to add energy and define zones
Tonal layering for a modern, monochromatic scheme
Opt for a flatweave or low-pile rug—they dry faster, are easier to clean, and lay well under furniture.
3. Sizing Is Everything
Choosing the right size helps your space feel cohesive and intentional:
For seating areas, select a rug large enough for at least the front legs of all furniture to sit on it.
For dining spaces, the rug should extend 24–30 inches beyond the table on all sides to accommodate chairs being pulled in and out.
Design tip: Going too small is the most common mistake. When in doubt, size up—it instantly makes the space feel more expansive and curated.
4. Care & Maintenance
Even the best outdoor rugs need a little love:
Shake or vacuum regularly to remove dirt and debris.
Hose off spills or stains and hang to dry.
Store rugs indoors or in a dry place during heavy rain or off-season months to extend their life.
